I'll admit it, my job gets boring. surprise! I know its hard to believe that filing charts, calling Blue Cross, and arguing with patients over how much they have to pay could ever be categorized as 'boring' .
the one and only thing that tends to irk me at work is how often people look completely through me at the front desk. its like I'm not even there. I'm just the machine that hands you paperwork and answers your questions. now please don't think I hate all humankind for walking into that office (setting off the most irritating doorbell known to man...) I've actually gotten used to being a faceless receptionist. but what I'm getting at is the fact that it always makes my day when someone actually takes a moment to talk directly to me. not to the person taking their money, not to the scheduler, not to the insurance information center - to ME.
a guy came in today and after I made some joke comment about how school and work don't mix, he didn't just politely laugh and leave, he asked me where I went to school (turns out he goes to South too) so he spent a good five minutes at the counter just chatting about which professors/classes he likes and why. did I think he was cute? heck no. did he compliment me in some flamboyant way? absolutely not. he simply took a little five minutes to acknowledge my existence which made his "have a nice day" 100x more memorable than the countless half-hearted mumbled "have a nice day"s I hear everyday at work. a small gesture that made my day all the better :)

if we all took just a couple minutes out of our day to stop and talk to the brunos cashier, bank teller, waiter at waffle house, barista dude at starbucks, or whoever it may be; think of what an impact you could make on their day...on their entire life.
